		<div style="clear:both;"></div><p>The old adage &#8220;a picture is worth a thousand words&#8221;underscores how a single image can communicate complex ideas. In my RSS feed, I&#8217;ve noticed an increase in infographics used for a variety of topics from mobile usage to social media stats. And in the work I&#8217;ve been doing for Virtual Edge Institute, we&#8217;ve created a couple of infographics as well.</p>
<p>While I envision more and more PR/marketing practitioners to use infographics, I would recommend limiting their use to summarizing key figures or information of interest to your audience. Here are a few of my favorite infographics:</p>
<p><span id="more-2074"></span></p>
<p><strong>Ask Aaron Lee, <a href="http://askaaronlee.com/how-many-times-do-you-tweet-your-blog-post/">How Many Times Do You Tweet Your Blog Post</a></strong></p>

<p><img class="aligncenter" title="Facebook Stats" src="http://blog.ogilvypr.com/wp-content/uploads/facebook-500-million.bmp" alt="" width="454" height="1167" /></p>
<p><strong>Brian Solis &#8211; Che</strong><a title="Foursquare stats" href="http://www.briansolis.com/2011/01/checking-in-to-the-state-of-foursquare/" target="_blank"><strong>cking-In to the State of Foursquare</strong></a></p>

In Brian Solis&#8217; &#8220;<a title="State of the Blogosphere 2010" href="http://www.briansolis.com/2010/12/the-state-of-the-blogosphere-2010/" target="_blank">The State of the Blogosphere 2010</a>,&#8221; post, he writes:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">&#8220;What might have started as a form of self-expression has officially graduated into fully fledged self-actualization. 30% of corporate bloggers admit to blogging as a way to get published or featured in traditional media. 57% of self-employed bloggers share their expertise and thought-leadership as a way of attracting new clients.  Across the board however, the preponderance of bloggers speak their mind to meet and connect with like-minded people. Blogs form the basis for the formation of <a href="http://www.briansolis.com/2010/11/from-social-graph-to-interest-graph-twitter-tells-you-who-to-follow/">interest graphs</a>, which, for all intents and purposes, represent the next stage of social networking. Close behind, a significant faction of bloggers use the platform to speak their mind as tied to areas of interest, specifically hobbyists, part-timers and the self-employed&#8221;</p>
<p><span id="more-2059"></span>To me this demonstrates the value of blogging as a medium for corporations to share their thought leadership to customers, partners, employees, media and potential customers/partners. While a corporate blog needs to fit into a company&#8217;s overall business objectives, those who take the time and effort do reap benefits in terms of increased visibility (either personal or corporate brand), new business leads, more loyal customers, media interest and much much more.</p>
<p>But don&#8217;t just take my word for it. Rather, take time to read the <a title="B2B Blogging Trends in 2011" href="http://www.aggregage.com/b2b-blogging-2011" target="_blank">B2B Blogging Trends in 2011</a> white paper produced by TonyKarrer and Tom Pick. I had the honor of being one of the many contributors who shared their thoughts on blogging in 2011:</p>

<p>While anyone who establishes a Twitter account or LinkedIn Group is not automatically an &#8220;expert&#8221; on social media, I do believe that you should practice what you preach. This point, as well as the role of a corporate presence vs. individual contributors, generated a lot of discussion.</p>
<p>Since the original post, my position about individual contributors has evolved. I believe that employees are an integral, if not essential, part of a successful social media strategy. However,  to simplify the data gathering and analysis, I opted to focus on corporate presences, recognizing that multiple individuals are contributing on behalf of the agency.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve included a slideshare presentation below, <a title="Flickr Images" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/11740228@N05/sets/72157624943518343/" target="_blank">images on flickr</a> that you can share (including the infographic to the left), and the list of PR agencies accessible via <a title="PR Agencies and Social Media 2010" href="https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Aq5uKdi7lB4sdDFKT1dKWXV2dW1WcUpUeTJpWTd6QUE&amp;hl=en" target="_blank">Google Docs</a> (All changes for 2010 are indicated in red. <p><img title="PR Agencies and Social Media: 2009 vs. 2010" src="http://www.prmeetsmarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Comparison-PR-and-social-media-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" align="left" /></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">* PR agencies increased their social media presence in 2010, with Flickr (500%), YouTube (379%) and Twitter (131%) demonstrating the largest increases respectively.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">* While most agencies didn&#8217;t link to their social media channels on their website in 2009, 83% included this on their home page in 2010.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">* Twitter was the most popular social media channel, with 80% of PR agencies having a presence. 35% had followers numbering over 1000.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">* 2 to 1, PR agencies had a Facebook Page or Group vs. a LinkedIn Group Page</p>
<h2>Conclusions: What a difference a year makes</h2>
<p>In just over 18 months, PR agencies have increased their presence on several social media channels. While content was not evaluated as part of this review, some agencies leveraged Flickr and YouTube to promote their clients. This raises an interesting issue about agencies becoming an active publishing entity.</p>
<p>If a PR agency ammasses thousands of followers or create a highly-ranked/influential blog, will it have the potential to become an informal media outlet itself? And if so, how will PR agencies manage this changing landscape? What do you think?</p>

<h2>Methodology</h2>
<p>I initially evaluated PR firms listed on <a href="http://www.odwyerpr.com/pr_firm_rankings/independents.htm">O’Dwyer’s list of top 100 independent PR firms</a>. This list was based on worldwide fees for firms with major US operations. As such, some prominent firms, such as Ogilvy &amp; Mather, Ketchum PR and others. An additional 13 firms, who had proactively added their information to the <a title="PR Firm Social Media Wiki" href="http://prfirmssocialmedia.pbworks.com/)" target="_blank">PR Firm Social Media Wiki</a>, were added to the 2010 review, yielding a total of 113 firms.</p>
<p>* I looked at if the agency had a blog, Twitter profile, Facebook page (both group and/or fan), LinkedIn Group, YouTube Channel or Flickr photostream.</p>
<p>* I didn’t categorize the type of PR each firm did – I took the list at its word</p>
<p>* If the blog wasn’t listed on the home page or easily found via a sitemap, I assumed there was none</p>
<p>* I searched on the agency’s name or common abbreviation as presented on their website. Anything more exotic or too cute, would not have been found</p>
<p>* For Twitter, I used Twitter search or tried to manually type in what seemed like an appropriate Twitter handle. Number of followers were based on number the week of September 20, 2010.</p>
<p>* I used the group search functions found on Facebook and LinkedIn respectively. I was looking for those who had proactively created a group page or claimed their fan page on Facebook. As such, LinkedIn Company pages were not included.</p>

My post received 66 comments while <a href="http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2009/02/19/walking-the-talk-some-agencies-and-vendors-demonstrate-social-media-prowess/">Jeremiah Owyang&#8217;s post</a> had 47 comments. When reviewing the comments, you could see two audiences emerging: </span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">- those who believe that you have to practice what you preach and</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">- those who believed that corporate presence wasn&#8217;t as important as much as the work that was done for clients and the individual participation within those firms</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">Regardless of which camp you belong to, the discussion resulted in the creation<span style="text-decoration: line-through;">ing</span> of a <a href="http://prfirmssocialmedia.pbwiki.com/">wiki to allow PR firms </a>to proactively update their profiles. To the <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">A few</span> firms that did proactively update their profilesm thank you. To those who haven&#8217;t yet, why not?</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">Overall, here is the breakdown:</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">- 109 firms are on the list</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">- 50 firms have blogs</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">- While 38 firms have corporate Twitter profiles, 5 firms deferred to individuals versus corporate Twitter. In total, 13 firms had individuals participating on Twitter.</span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">- 47 firms had a Facebook presence, while 38 had LinkedIn </span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">- 16 firms have started using Flickr, YouTube and Second Life</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">So, who else is missing from the list? Go to <a href="http://prfirmssocialmedia.pbwiki.com/">http://prfirmssocialmedia.pbwiki.com</a> to make the udpates.</span></span></p>

		<div style="clear:both;"></div><p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">There has been quite a bit of discussion from the original <a href="http://prmeetsmarketing.com/2009/02/17/social-media-pr-agency/">post</a> and on a post by Jeremiah Owyang titled <a href="http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2009/02/19/walking-the-talk-some-agencies-and-vendors-demonstrate-social-media-prowess/#comment-898844">&#8220;Walking the Talk: Some Agencies and Vendors Demonstrate Social Media Prowess,&#8221;</a>. I honestly didn&#8217;t think that my initial effort would generate such discussion, which I think provides a lot of fodder for thought. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">I do want to provide my perspective on one aspect of Jennifer Leggio&#8217;s comment:</span></span></p>
<blockquote>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">Client service comes first, always. Yes agencies should strive to have a presence of their own but not having a presence on Twitter or LinkedIn for their corporation is not a good measurement — at all.</span></span></p>
</blockquote>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">When reviewing Jennifer Leggio&#8217;s post <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/feeds/?p=512">“Is &#8216;social PR&#8217; for real?”,</a> this paragraph resonated with me:</span></span></p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">Agencies need to work hard to ease their clients’ or potential clients’ minds by showing hard metrics of how social programs have worked for other clients. There is also more justifiable pressure on marketers as a whole to <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/feeds/?p=321">demonstrate ROI</a> from social media programs. Clients should start requiring these types of ROI metrics or case studies and not take “this is a new practice” as a valid excuse for the agencies not having proof points. <em>The agency at the very least should be able to show how it’s built its own brand / the brand of its people through social media.</em></span></span></p></blockquote>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">I do agree with the position that a PR agency having a social media presence is not necessarily a barometer of how that agency can deliver results for clients using social media. However, I will argue that an agency&#8217;s ability to use these tactics/strategies to build awareness and industry expertise demonstrates understanding of the pressures that clients face and their objectives. This includes increasing incoming sales leads, communicating with key customers, building thought leadership, reaching key audiences, etc.</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">Besides this particular point, I want to add the following:</span></span></p>
<ul>
<li>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">I recognize that individual contributors are just as important as corporate brands. I will still assert that corporate brands will be just as important for establishing brand awareness and thought leadership</span></span></p>
</li>
<li>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">With that said, how one participates in social media can be dictated based on one&#8217;s audience and goals. I strongly believe that having a presence in the right avenues helps to drive an agency&#8217;s lead generation efforts</span></span></p>
</li>
<li>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">Since I was laid off, I decided to do this <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">research</span> out of curiousity. I knew it would take time and spent a several hours over a two week period to &#8220;research&#8221; the original list. As I was doing this myself, I acknowledge that I may have missing or incorrect information. As such, I appreciate those who have provided updates in comments or emails to me. I have updated the table accordingly.</span></span> </p>
</li>
</ul>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-medium;">And finally, as this endeavor is much bigger than I originally anticipated, I have set up a <a href="http://prfirmssocialmedia.pbwiki.com/">public wiki</a> for agencies and the community to make updates directly. </span></span></p>

		<div style="clear:both;"></div><p>A lot of PR firms are stating that they have social media capabilities and can help develop your strategy in this arena. So I thought, how many are actually practicing what they’re preaching?</p>
<p>I decided to see which PR firms were actively participating in social media. [update 2/20/09] I initially evaluated PR firms listed on <a href="http://www.odwyerpr.com/pr_firm_rankings/independents.htm">O’Dwyer’s list of top 100 independent PR firms</a>. This list was based on worldwide fees for firms with major US operations. As such, some prominent firms, such as Ogilvy &amp; Mather, Ketchum PR and others. Since this post was published, the list has been exanded to include firms that have <em>proactively </em>included information in the comments or email. It is now sorted alphabetically and includes different types of firms, such as IR, healthcare and technology.</p>
<h2>Some points to keep in mind:</h2>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">- I looked at if the agency had a blog, Twitter profile, Facebook page (both group and/or fan), LinkedIn Group</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">- While there are individuals within each agency who have great online presences, I was seeking <em><strong>corporate</strong></em> presence. So some fields may be marked as “none” as a result</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">- And since I did this myself, I was trying to maximize my time:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">* I didn’t categorize the type of PR each firm did – I took the list at its word</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">* If the blog wasn’t listed on the home page or easily found via a sitemap, I assumed there was none or you don’t really want me to find your blog</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">* I searched on the agency’s name or common abbreviation as presented on their website. Anything more exotic or too cute, would not have been found</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">* For Twitter, I used Twitter search or tried to manually type in what seemed like an appropriate Twitter handle</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">* I used the group search functions found on Facebook and LinkedIn respectively</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">* I decided not to look at other sites like delicious, slideshare.net, flickr, etc., frankly, because I was doing this myself =); however, I did include it if the agency made it easy to find </p>
<h2>Interesting Findings:</h2>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">- Almost all of the agencies did NOT link to their profiles on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. from their website. I would’ve expected this on their Contact Us page or linked from the Blog but this was very rare.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">- While those who had blogs did a good job of putting the blog link front and center on the home page, some were too cute and hid the link under a different section of the website. If you’re one of these agencies and I found your blog regardless, it’s because it was listed on your site map.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">- 39 agencies had blogs; 28 had Twitter profiles with one having a hashtag but no Twitter profile; 35 agencies had Facebook Group pages with two establishing fan pages; and 25 had LinkedIn Group pages while two created company pages</p>
<p>So let’s see how this little experiment works. If you’re a PR agency and I have incorrect information, please provide the corrections below or write a post that links back. I will then update the listing as quickly as I can. And if you have accounts with Flickr, YouTube and Slideshare.net, let me know.</p>
<p>But If you <em><strong>don’t </strong></em>have a social media presence, tell me why. I want to give folks the benefit of doubt. I was able to format the list into a table below captured the list in a jpg (couldn’t get it to format correctly, sorry!) or you can download a pdf version of this list. visit the <a title="PR Firms with Social Media Wiki" href="http://prfirmssocialmedia.pbwiki.com/">public wiki</a> and make changes to the table.</p>
<h2>Table of PR Firms and Social Media Presence</h2>
<p>Update: 2/19/09 &#8211; This table was updated to be in alphabetical order, includes additional PR firms not on the original list, and eliminates &#8220;none&#8221; from the table. You can also visit the <a title="PR Firms with Social Media Wiki" href="http://prfirmssocialmedia.pbwiki.com/">PR Firms Social Media Public Wiki</a> to make changes.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">Last night, I went to a panel discussion hosted by the Horn Group and <a href="http://girlsintech.net/"><span style="color: #000080;">Girls In Tech</span></a>. There was a star line-up of panelists: <a href="http://web-strategist.com/blog">Jeremiah Owyang </a>of Forrester Research and Web Strategist Blog, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/">Kara Swisher</a> of WSJ and All Things D, Susan Etlinger, VP of <a href="http://horngroup.com/">Horn Group</a> and <a href="http://mediasurvey.com/">Sam Whitmore</a> of Media Survey as moderator.<span>  </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">The topic provided attractive with over 200 people packed in the Horn Group offices on Howard St. Considering the economic news swirling around me, the event reminded me a bit of the heady dot.com days – yes, I really am that old Virginia! Twitter tag #prblog.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">Sam took a quick poll of the audience before commencing with the Q&amp;A. It seemed the audience was 60% PR folks, 20-25% Horn Group clients and other people interested in the topic from marketing/social media backgrounds.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></p>
<h2>PR is not dead. It&#8217;s being reborn” &#8211; Sabrina Horn</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">To summarize some key quotes from the evening (may not be verbatim quotes but gives you a gist of the meaning):</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">Jeremiah:</span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Join community to reach audience regardless of your client. Has the relationship with person I want. It&#8217;s the influencer model”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Opportunity for PR is to listen. People will tell you what they&#8217;re interested in”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Extend the value of PR – currently don&#8217;t have the key skills to do that”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Big opportunity to use these tools to grow beyond corporate communications”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Use the tools to repair the PR reputation”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">Kara Swisher – I&#8217;ve read her blog and hearing her in person was definitely more amusing!</span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“PR people are so easy to get upset. Stop being reactive to the bloggers who are doing this to be trafic whores”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“War with PR is not important. There are more important things to fight over like Proposition 8”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Focus on people with amazing relationship with people”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Give me news and trends that your company represents. Trends with interesting products. Needs real news. Interesting figures and thought leaders. Cool interesting products that people are using. Weird stories will also get me too.”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Nothing new – it&#8217;s about how good is the product. Don&#8217;t PR crap products”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">Susan</span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“PR is about creating replicable processes, but replicable process can get you in trouble.”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">Audience Comments</span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Relationship economy. Release is so narrow”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“</span></strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">[PR's] obligation is to not put out shit out there. If it has value, then yes. Otherwise, no.” Charlie Cooper, CNET</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“How to leverage important bloggers to help with news” &#8211; Razorfish</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“How does PR practitioner leverage these tools to help business”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">“Performance based payment and measurement like a media buy – will an agency risk this?”</span></p>
<h2>Deja Vu – Didn&#8217;t we see this 10 years ago?</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">For a panel discussion that promised to be titillating, I found that it was bogged down by semantics of PR&#8217;s role in the social media landscape versus how the industry, as a whole, can better address this as a core competency. These were the same discussions that occurred 10 years ago with the rise of the Internet, which ironically was referenced when Sabrina pulled out a big, black binder about the impact of the Internet on PR.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span>To paraphrase one audience member, what we&#8217;re referring to – Twitter, blogs, wikis, etc. &#8211; are just communications tools. In 5-10 years, these may be commonplace ways to communicate with your audience. While the panel was informational for those new to PR or currently struggling with PR&#8217;s value within the larger marketing and social media landscape, I think the panel didn&#8217;t truly delve into the question of the evening – Will Social Media Kill PR.</p>
<h2>My Perspective?</h2>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">I was sitting in the balcony where most of the social media folks were sitting. When Sam turned to us and asked if our issues were being addressed, frankly they weren&#8217;t and I said so (yes, that was me voicing the need to get beyond PR and talk about how this fits into the larger marketing arena). Unfortunately the discussion turned back to the basics of PR 101 meeting social media. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">In the end, I agree with Jeremiah. PR has a window of opportunity to leverage social media to build higher business value with customers and companies beyond a corporate communications capability. When the discussion evolves from which outlet can you get me in to one of what audiences do you want to influence, then PR will have a seat at the table. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">But hasn&#8217;t this always been the crux of the problem for PR from the beginning? Does social media really change that conversation? I don&#8217;t think so. What do you think?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;"><em>Update: </em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;">- Jeremiah&#8217;s post about <a href="http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2008/11/13/business-opportunities-for-the-evolved-pr-agency/">four biz opportunities for PR agencies</a></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;">- <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081113/is-social-media-killing-pr-or-maybe-vice-versa/">Kara Swisher&#8217;s post</a> about the panel</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;">- <a href="http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/2383452/35725178">Sam Whitmore&#8217;s</a> summary</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;">- Charles Cooper&#8217;s take &#8211; <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-10787_3-10096253-60.html">PR is Killing PR, not Social Media. </a></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;">- While Lewis Green wasn&#8217;t at the panel, he brings up a good point about <a href="http://lgbusinesssolutions.typepad.com/solutions_to_grow_your_bu/2008/11/why-social-media-doesnt-make-pr-better.html">the value of social media in PR.</a></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;">- Horn Group&#8217;s summary about their <a title="Horn Group Social Media and PR" href="http://horngroup.blogs.com/horn_group_weblog/2008/11/is-social-media.html">Is Social Media Killing PR panel</a>.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0;">- <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/feeds/?p=315">Jennifer Leggio&#8217;s post at ZDNet</a>. I think she summarized it perfectly: &#8221; too much focus on dialing for dollars and not enough focus on making PR stretch to support real business initiatives.&#8221;</p>

Getting and maintaining the motivation to post regularly is not. I originally started my blog in May 2007 as a way to discuss how PR is an integral part of marketing. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">I started writing one post a week, grew to two posts and then even did a weekly digest of interesting articles. As time passed, my posting became more irregular while work increased as well as the activities of life. On top of that, I&#8217;ve been struggling with what to write. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">I thought – I want to be original. If someone else wrote on a topic, why repeat it – I would just link to the post and put in my 2 cents as part of a weekly digest. I was amazed at the number of intelligent folks around me – <a title="Social Media Explorer" href="www.socialmediaexplorer.com/">Jason Falls</a>, <a title="CK's Blog" href="www.ck-blog.com/">CK</a>, <a title="Chaos Scenario" href="www.chaosscenario.com/ ">Cam Beck</a>, <a title="Chris Brogan" href="www.chrisbrogan.com/">Chris Brogan</a>, <a title="PR Squared" href="www.pr-squared.com/ ">Todd Defren</a>, <a title="Buzz Marketing for Technology" href="http://buzzmarketingfortech.blogspot.com/">Paul Dunay</a> and more! </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">What could I possibly contribute? Not writing for the past few weeks has allowed me to reflect and realize why I started blogging in the first place. The purpose of blogging is <strong>PERSONAL</strong>!</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">It&#8217;s not about how often I post. It&#8217;s about writing something of <strong>VALUE</strong> to me and, in the process, this will help someone else.</span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">It&#8217;s not about writing what motivates others, it&#8217;s about writing about what <strong>MOTIVATES</strong> me. And maybe, this will motivate someone. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">It&#8217;s not about creating my own community. It&#8217;s about how my blog can <strong>CONTRIBUTE</strong> to the larger community</span></span></p>
<h2>My blogging commitment to ME and YOU</h2>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">So what does this mean? For me, my goal is to write posts that highlight what I&#8217;ve learned. To share any new insights that I have. And in the process, get to know about you while revealing more about me. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">As part of this process, I&#8217;m finally going to update my blog theme, so bear with me as I may make changes. Playing with different themes or maybe soliciting help for a more customized look. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">While I can&#8217;t promise to post often, I can promise that I will try to make my posts more personal. That they are of value to me, motivate me and contribute to the community. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:x-medium;">So – what do you think?</span></span></p>
